Creating a Storybook World with Depth and Shadows
Scenic Solutions provided scenic fabrication for a regional production of Into the Woods, Stephen Sondheim’s beloved musical that blends fairytale characters into a complex, emotionally charged journey. The set needed to support both whimsical storytelling and darker thematic turns—delivering a magical forest that evolves as the characters’ wishes unfold.
Layered Scenic Design for Shifting Tones
Building the Woods as a Living Character
The forest in Into the Woods isn’t just a backdrop—it’s a central figure in the story. Scenic Solutions brought it to life with:
- Textured tree units and stylized foliage elements that added depth and dimension
- Modular scenic components allowing for varied pathways, hidden clearings, and shadowy corners
- A color palette that shifted from bright and fantastical to moody and foreboding as the story progressed
Functionality to Support a Complex Narrative
The set was built with movement, magic, and transitions in mind:
- Integrated entrances and exits for fluid scene changes and surprise reveals
- Reinforced platforms and structures for physical interaction, including climbing, crossing, and staging intimate scenes
- Built to accommodate dynamic lighting that transformed the mood from act to act
Supporting Ensemble Storytelling and Visual Rhythm
Every visual element was constructed to enhance ensemble movement and musical pacing. From the Baker’s cottage to Rapunzel’s tower, the scenery offered just enough realism to ground the story while leaving space for theatrical imagination.
