Blue Man Group – Touring Production Fabrication for North American Tour

One of the key requirements for Blue Man Group’s North American Tour was an aggressive production schedule: approximately an eight-hour load in and a three-hour load out at venues across the country.

Scenic Solutions engineered the touring set to meet these demands, balancing speed, durability, safety, and repeatability without compromising the production’s signature industrial aesthetic.

Constructed from 7.5 tons of steel, the set featured four 24-foot towers arranged in a U-shaped configuration, complete with moveable ladders that allowed performers to access upper-level instruments and scenic elements.

To support the realities of touring, the towers were designed to break down into 18 rectangular transportable pods, allowing the production to move efficiently between venues while housing hundreds of integrated components including video monitors, lighting fixtures, musical instruments, and cameras.

Custom Engineering for Rapid Load In and Load Out

To meet the demanding touring schedule, Scenic Solutions engineered several fabrication solutions that dramatically improved assembly, transport, and on-stage positioning efficiency.

Customized Scaffolding Casters for Efficient Mobility

Each of the 18 tower pods was fitted with customized easy-on, easy-off scaffolding casters engineered by Scenic Solutions.

Designed specifically to streamline transport between trucks and stage, the caster system allowed pods to be moved quickly and efficiently by two stagehands instead of requiring four or more.

The system also improved precision during placement, making it easier to position each pod accurately during load in and strike.

Toolless Connection System for Faster Assembly

Scenic Solutions also engineered a toolless connection system that enabled rapid assembly of the tower structures while maintaining stability and safety.

As pods were unloaded, each section could be wheeled into place, attached to chain hoists, and lifted into position. Heavy-duty Destaco-style latches allowed the next pod to be quickly rolled underneath and securely connected without requiring traditional tooling, significantly reducing assembly time while supporting consistent execution across tour stops.
