VENUE: Drury Lane Theatre, Chicago, IL
DESIGNER: Kevin Depinet
YEAR: 2019
A whimsical musical, based on the stories of P.L. Travers and the Disney film, with the illusion of magic as Mary Poppins, appears to slide up the banister and the untidy nursery is put-to-rights without the performers touching the props.
- Three stacks of books were constructed, and air-lift casters installed to make them easy to move. In one musical number, they represented chimneys and were used as dancing surfaces by the performers.
- Curved book pages (nicknamed “potato chips”) were built using plywood over aluminum framing, hung upstage and on the proscenium, and used as projection surfaces.
- A complete deck floor was painted in our shop and then installed at the venue.
